A MathLinks Activity to Try With Your Students

Try this free middle school math activity from our December webinar.

The Lake Problem: There are some adults and children who need to get across a lake, and only one small canoe. How are they going to get everyone across?

How many adults and children are there? Who can fit in the canoe? Are there piranhas in the lake? So many questions to ask! Students want to know!

Crossing the Lake is a very rich, non-routine problem. Its context, coupled with careful posing of the situation, motivates students to persevere and look for structure in solving it, and allows for multiple solution paths and modalities. In addition, it creates a purpose and a need for using algebra.
